Welcome to the Course
Welcome to the MA Practice-based Play Therapy, by dissertation, taught by blended learning methods. We hope that you will be able to contribute to the evidence base of the profession through your original research. Our Course Director and Academic Supervisors are there to support you and to get you off to a good start with thorough planning. It is important for your progression and achievement that you submit all work for all assignments in a timely manner. It is also important that you keep copies of all work submitted until after you have graduated. You should also keep any receipts confirming the submission of assignments. In the event of your submitted work being lost you may be required to produce a copy of the work and submission receipt. If you are unable to do so, your work will not be marked.
It is important to note that submitting all assignments is a requirement of your course. Should you experience extenuating circumstances which prevent you from submitting on time please make yourself aware of the Mitigation and Extenuating Circumstances process. Without any form of extenuating circumstances, standard penalties apply for late submission of assessed work. Full details of the penalties for late submission of course work are available in section 3 of the Academic Regulations at https://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/our-university/public-information/academic-regulations/
If you have been recommended 'flexibility around deadlines' as a reasonable adjustment in a Reasonable Adjustment Plan, your Course Administrator will be able to advise you of the process.
You will be required to submit your written work via Turnitin and information on Turnitin is available here: https://libguides.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/it_support/mybeckett/turnitin
Check your module handbooks for details on how and when individual assessments are to be submitted.
Assessed work will normally be returned with appropriate feedback within four weeks of your submission. Each Module Handbook will provide you with specific guidelines on how and when you will receive this.
Formative feedback includes:
-Research journal: your Academic Supervisor and Course Director may ask to see your research journal to gain an understanding of how you are developing your study.
-Session optional assignments: you are encouraged to complete these as you work through the seven sessions of the MA course contents as detailed on ALMS. Assignments are submitted to your Course Director for feedback.
-Proposal: you will receive comments on this along with pointers as to how you can improve the standard of your work from your Academic Supervisor.
-Dissertation: you will receive comments on this along with pointers as to how you can improve the standard of your work from your Academic Supervisor.
Results from module assessments and decisions on progression or awards are available on the Results Online system: https://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/student-information/exams-assessments-and-awards/results-online/
Results will appear in Results Online within five working days after the date of the Progression and Award Board meeting (the meeting where your end of level outcome will be decided) or the Module Board meeting (the meeting where modular outcomes are decided). If you are unsure about when you might receive your results or have queries relating to your results, you should contact your Course Administrator. If your profile of marks has been presented to an Examination Board, you will receive an email with instructions on how to access your results.
On successful completion of your award, you will receive information about receiving your degree certificate and graduation ceremony. APAC will pass your updated qualification details onto your PTUK's PSA Register entry.
If you are unable to submit an assignment due to extenuating circumstances, you must provide APAC with details and any available evidence as soon as possible. Contact the APAC Course Administration team contact@apac.org.uk for the extenuating circumstances form for extension requests.
For more details on 'fit to sit/submit' and mitigation and extenuating circumstances, and the online form for applying for mitigation requests, please see: Mitigation and Extenuating Circumstances

Teaching & Learning
Due to the blended learning method of course delivery, which allows you to study at home and at your own pace, there is no externally set course calendar. Seminars are organised in liaison with your Course Director and, later, contact with Academic Supervisors is arranged between yourselves. You must however complete your dissertation within 18 months of starting the course, to avoid additional course fees, and within 10 years of starting the PG Certificate Therapeutic Play Skills (this is an APAC requirement).
It is important to discuss with your Academic Supervisor your own individual timetable to take into account the following:
-Proposal submission and Ethical Paperwork Bundle to Mike Wragg for the LBU ethical approval process: allow between 2-3 months for first and second marking and to go through ethical approval. This happens around month 9 of the course.
-Dissertation submission via Turnitin: allow 3 months for first and second marking (and external examiner sampling) before Examination Board dates.
Activities
The main activities are lectures and presentations delivered by e-learning methods, webinars enabling group discussion, signposted reading, directed exercises and one to one academic supervision. Students develop their own cohort-based network
Academic Integrity and Research Ethics
All dissertations/research projects (including literature reviews using information in the public domain) require research ethics approval and you must submit your ethical approval notification with your dissertation for the assessment to be marked. You must follow the guidance provided on your module regarding obtaining ethical approval and it is your responsibility to ensure you have received ethical approval evidence prior to any data collection.
The Academic Integrity Regulations also apply to academic integrity breaches and unfair practices related to research ethics and dissertations. The consequences of Academic Integrity Regulations breaches for research ethics are detailed in the Academic Regulations, section 10, Academic Integrity and on this web page: https://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/student-information/academic-skills-and-advice/academic-integrity/
APAC also requires that research undertaken on the course follows PTUK's Ethical Framework. Details will be provided in your module handbook. PTUK Ethical Framework
Please note that you cannot use the LBU research ethics online system to apply for ethical approval and you will use the word document applications forms, which will provided in the module.
Level 7 Core Modules
Developing a Practice Based Play Therapy Research Proposal (20 credits)
Research Dissertation for Practice Based Play Therapy (40 credits)
A standard 20 credit module equates to 200 notional learning hours, comprising teaching, learning and assessment and independent study.
Overall Workload in hours | Level 7 |
Teaching and Learning | 82 |
Independent Study and Assessment | 518 |
Total | 600 |
Details of teaching staff can be found on the APAC website: https://www.apac.org.uk/Home/Faculty
Attendance & Absence
There is a minimum attendance requirement of 85% minimum attendance in order to successfully complete the PG Certificate and the PG Diploma. Due to the experiential nature of the training in which group dynamics play an integral role, it is not possible for students to miss any part of the course due to pre-existing engagements. In extenuating circumstances, a student may be allowed to miss a day's training, but a 'catch-up' session will need to be undertaken in the student's own time at an additional expense.
Please note there is not a minimum attendance requirement for the MA Practice Based Play Therapy course.
You must notify your Course Director and the APAC Course Administration team if you are unable to attend a scheduled training day or weekend as soon as you are aware of your inability to attend.
If you are unable to study because of illness for more than 14 consecutive days (including weekends), you should advise APAC as soon as possible.
If you are unable to submit an assignment due to illness or extenuating circumstances, you must provide APAC with details and any available evidence as soon as possible. Contact the APAC course administration team contact@apac.org.uk for the appropriate extenuating circumstances form.
For more details on 'fit to submit/sit' and mitigation and extenuating circumstances, please see: Mitigation and Extenuating Circumstances
If you are considering withdrawal from your course you should speak to your personal tutor / academic advisor to discuss your reasons. If there is a problem, staff at your delivery provider or the University may be able to help. It may be possible to arrange suspension of studies from your course.
If you are considering withdrawing, permanently or temporarily, you must complete a withdrawal form, which you can obtain from the administrative staff at your delivery provider. This form must be submitted as soon as possible as withdrawals cannot normally be backdated. For further details see the Student Regulations.

APAC has introduced the use of SLACK, a cloud-based set of proprietary team collaboration tools and services. The name is an acronym for 'Searchable Log of All Conversation and Knowledge'. It enables teaching staff, academic supervisors, students, the information that is shared, and the tools used to come together to get things done. It may also be used for the Course Director to communicate with the team and students and to manage many different streams of conversation relating to the work.
There is also a social channel to enable students to share experience with each other, as a virtual team to replace the face-to-face 'chat' that one may enjoy on a traditional course. This takes place in a secure, mediated group that avoids the dangers and other disadvantages of Facebook.
The peer reviewed 'International Journal of Play and Creative Arts Therapy Research' published by Play Therapy UK (PTUK) provides a welcoming opportunity for publication.
Student Voice
We are committed to working in partnership with you and nominated Student Representatives to provide you with an inclusive, safe and engaging learning environment which is conducive to study for all our students and our staff. An important element of your time studying with us is your engagement in developing your learning. Your engagement and attendance on your course enables you to further your learning and supports your achievement, course completion and aspirations for the future. There is an expectation that students will attend, engage in their learning and submit on time for assessment. We provide support for you to maximise your time studying with us and to develop your learning, skills and abilities to support you in your chosen career path.
We seek active participation by all our students in the continuous enhancement of our courses and through our monitoring, annual review and enhancement processes. These are formal processes used by our University for assuring the academic standards and quality of your course and its continuous improvement. These processes utilise your feedback, External Examiners' reports, feedback from staff and others, data relating to student outcomes on the course and student surveys to reflect on areas of good practice and areas for further enhancement. We invite all students to participate in a range of opportunities to provide us with feedback on your course and modules. This may include discussions with staff, focus groups, and meetings (e.g. with Course Representatives or with staff) and formalised student surveys e.g. mid module reviews, end of module evaluations and specific course or other surveys.
Course Representatives (Reps) at undergraduate and postgraduate taught levels are student volunteers who represent you in formal and informal meetings with the University, and follow up on actions that have occurred because of student feedback. You can become a Course Rep, volunteering to represent the views of your peers in order to improve students' academic experience.
In the first few weeks of your time at Leeds Beckett, your Course Director will facilitate an opportunity to appoint Course Reps on your course.
LBSU provides support, training and ongoing development for Course Reps and supports their engagement in enhancement activities throughout the academic year.
Being a Course Rep provides you with an opportunity to enhance your own learning and the development of relevant professional and employability skills alongside your studies. As a Course Rep you would play an important role in:
- Acting as a point of contact and advocate for students on your course and in supporting their active engagement.
- Gathering feedback from students on your course to inform enhancements to the quality of your course and the student experience.
- Facilitating good communication between students and staff on the course.
- Working with the Course Director, members of the course team and the Students' Union to enhance your course.
- Facilitating and engaging in meetings about your course; and
- Being an ambassador for your course.
Further information about being a Course Representative is available at:
We invite all students to participate in a range of opportunities to provide us with feedback on your course and modules. This may include discussions with staff, focus groups, and meetings (e.g. with Course Representatives or with staff) and formalised student surveys e.g. mid module reviews, end of module evaluations and specific course or other surveys.
We are committed to providing a high quality experience for all our students. We welcome comments and compliments from students, and find them valuable for on-going improvements to our provision. Comments and compliments about your course can be raised with your course representative or directly with your personal tutor / academic advisor.
If you have a specific complaint about your course, you should initially follow the complaints procedure of your delivery provider.
